Some dude yesterday was insisting the only true measure of a car's performance is its top speed, which in 99% of cars is limited by tires and not the performance of the car itself.
But no, since his car had a slightly higher electronically-limited top speed (which the car couldn't reach on a bet), his is better.
U fokkin wot m8
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

So cars where the top speed is most likely to never be used is better than say acceleration or handling, which is used all the time? Someone is a bonehead.

Quoted top speeds are always wrong anyway. Fiat for example has cars with fairly different gearing and power all rated at 99mph, because I assume insurance goes higher if the car can pass 100mph. Basically they lie.

That's like saying that the only true measure of a motocross rider is the number of flips he has done. Yes a triple backflip is impressive, but it's rarely used.

As bad as people who think a cars performance can only be determined by individual aspects such as...
0-60 time
Horsepower
Weight
Drivetrain layout
Transmission type
I could go on, but point has been made. Individual specs over the sum of all the parts.

If there was no air, a Rover Metro would do a million miles an hour. So there.

one of my old friends tried to tell me that the higher the speedo goes the higher the top speed was lol
I then told him that my car (a diesel station wagon AKA mom-mobile) was technically faster than his 86 Mustang GT Trolololol
That shut him up pretty quickly ;)

So, by that logic, a stock 427 Shelby Cobra is outperformed* by a stock Mercedes C300 sedan?
*Shelby Cobra top speed is limited by the aerodynamics to ~140MPH, C300 is electronically limited to 155MPH. Lets not even talk about the difference in horsepower, torque or coolness......

Its one thing to appreciate a terrible car's Surprising agility, for instance My Dad's Odyssey does 0-60 in 12 Seconds weighing in at just over 4200lbs, 210Hp with a 4speed Auto. Is that impressive for a V6 Minivan, hell yes, but that doesnt mean I can go compare it to a S2000.

While that might have been true 20 years ago, when breaking 200 mph was rare, its a pretty asinine comment to make these days. IMHO these days youre quarter mile and skidpad numbers are probably the most relevant.

Limited by tires? Pretty much every "performance" car I've ever purchased came with ZR rated tires. No way in hell any of them is getting near 186 mph. My damn FIAT came with ZR rated Pirellis.

I was actually going that fast. Keep in mind speedos are usually off a bit especially when topped out.

U WOT M8!?!?! :O
I've actually hit 105 in my Sportwagen LOL ;) The electronically limited top speed is (officially) 130MPH with 140HP and 236TQ... I wonder what it would be with 175WHP and 330TQ?

I'll have to try to top out my diesel one day. It's got 265hp and 425 lb.ft. Of torque and is much slipier than the WRX.

Funnily enough, the speedometer on my car (Volvo 850R) only reads up to 140mph, while the car tops out at 155. Not that I've tried it, or anything.
Of course, the 85mph speedometers that were required in the '80s were hilarious too, especially when they implemented them by leaving the numbers off after 85.

Late 80's Mustangs all had 85MPH speedos... and topped out at 137 lol
My Jetta has a 160MPH but can only hit 130 :(

My b5 a4 2.8l v6 is similar, apparently topped at 149 when new, maybe i'll runa salt flats test on that theory (I live 1.5 hours from the bonneveille salt flats) but back to the point, my speedo reads up to 160. My merkur xr4ti did the same was supposed to top at 140, speedo ran to 150.
